About Us

“Lokayata” literally means the philosophy of the people, the term was first used by ancient Buddhists to refer to common-tribal philosophical views and a sort of this worldly or nature lore. Popularly recognized as a materialistic philosophical system that accepts perception as the only pramaṇa i.e. means to knowledge, consciousness as a product of matter and sensuous pleasure as the only goal of life.

Revived in 2020, Lokayata strives to be an institution dedicated to art initiatives ranging from high end and established artists to promoting new works by emerging artists. Lokayata invites fluid & versatile ideas and wishes to provide a platform for them all.

Amidst the greenery, Lokayata Art gallery marks its spot by amalgamating modernity and Nature.

The piece “IGUANA” on the gallery’s crown stands 100 ft. long and is made from fibreglass and clay modelling. It symbolizes the struggle between modern society and nature, and its location here at the gallery signifies nature’s grief, where nature tired of our society has left its home and sits in the cityscape earning to relieve us of all iniquitous energy around us. It emphasizes the need to rule out the hypocrisies of our society and admire & promote all forms of art indiscriminately.

Gallery That Thrives on Creativity

In a prime location, just a minute’s walk from Hauz Khas fort built by Allauddin Khilji and Deer park, and with a total floor space of 10,000 square feet, Lokayata is a cutting edge art gallery that thrives on creativity and the opportunity to inspire.

President’s Vision

Sanjeev Verma

Seven decades ago, Mulk Raj Anand had the single desire to place India on the world art map, a cultural hub that excites and garners the attention of art lovers across the world. The fulfilment of this desire is the Lokayata Art Gallery.

With its establishment in 1960 Lokayata has aspired to uncover and explore the full potential of art in India, through promotion and showcasing of the very best that Indian art has to offer. Through its discovery of some of the most talented artists in the country, Lokayata sought to bridge the gap between Indian art and the world art culture.

Today, under the leadership of Mr Sanjeev Verma, Lokayata Art Gallery strives to fulfil Anand’s vision. With the mission of making art accessible to all through exhibitions of the work of both emerging and established artists and displaying art styles from diverse cultural backgrounds, Lokayata wants to paint the Indian art scene anew with an array of fresh colours.

A visionary at heart, Mulk Raj Anand was one of the finest patrons of the Indian arts. Having made a mark on the international literary scene with his writings and contribution to English literature, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1967. In fact, it was his love for artistic expression in the written word that gave rise to his vision for the fine arts in India.

It was precisely his insightfulness that led to his desire to bring to the Indian art scene the global art exhibition format with the establishment of the country’s first Triennale of Contemporary World Art. This crowning glory marked the beginning of Lokyata’s journey.

With the institution of the Lokayata trust, Anand fulfilled his vision for a close-knit community of lovers, creators and critics of art. The Lokayata gallery became a cultural centre breathing new life into the promotion and encouragement of emerging and existing artists alike.

The Lokayata art gallery as stands today is a symbol of Mulk Raj Anand’s creative and far-sighted thought. Inspired by the magnitude of his ideas and the ability to turn them into reality, we at Lokyata strive to carry forward the art revolution that he began, decades ago.
